Momo Wholefood

Oh Momo, you beautiful thing.

I get asked on a weekly basis, what my favourite place to eat in Newcastle is. Annoyingly, my answer is always, “Well, what do you feel like? We have good Ethiopian, Peruvian, Macedonian, sourdough pizza, ¬†bakeries, Japanese, seafood and wine bars!” (People usually just want one restaurant, but I just can’t choose!)

But breakfast narrows it down. Recently, Momo has been my go to. The Hunter St cafe is run by the same people who own the cafe at Organic Feast in East Maitland. Their menu is ethnically diverse and full of options for any dietary requirement. Their portions are generous and presentation is throughly insta-friendly.

The cafe itself is absolutely gorgeous. Situated in an old corner bank, it has high ceilings, regal columns and rustic touches of green.

But, let’s be honest, the menu is the biggest drawcard. It has delicious options for everyone should you be vegan, gluten-free or dairy free. It is also one of the few places in Newcastle that serves you Asian food for breakfast. Sometimes you just want curry for breakfast! I appreciate the fact that Momo provides for this Asian and her pseudo-Asian fianc√©, who has a more Asian palate than her.

As you can imagine, one of our go-to breakfasts at Momo’s is the Indian Breakfast. The Indian styled scrambled eggs are beautifully spiced and usually leaves me craving said eggs for weeks after that. Oh, and I love coriander. The spiced potatoes, warm and comforting. And all that served with a homemade flat bread and chilli sauce? I’ll just drink the chilli sauce really. I am SOLD.

Let’s also talk about one of their most photogenic breakfasts, the crumpets. A feast for the eyes really.

Yesterday I wildly deviated from my string of savory breakfasts and had the cacao bircher bowl. YUM! It was full of coconutty sago goodness with fresh coconut shavings, topped with cacao granola, berries and flower petals. I mean, don’t we all deserve flower petals on our breakfasts? It was also HUGE! I have a bottomless pit for a stomach but as I ate, and ate, and ate, I wondered if I would ever finish my breakfast. I did.

My beautiful date, Kelsey, had the nourish bowl with both eggs and haloumi because it was her last day of placement EVER. This too, was huge, big enough that Kelsey took the leftovers with her for lunch.

Are you sold yet? Well, you should be. Because Momo is amazing. And SPRING HAS SPRUNG! That makes me very excited to do ALL the things!
